The Γ * P Total Cross Section and Elastic Diffraction

چکیده

The empirical scaling law, wherein the total photoabsorption cross section depends on the single variable η = (Q 2 + m 2 0)/Λ 2 (W 2), provides empirical evidence for saturation in the sense of σγ * p(W 2 , Q 2)/σγp(W 2) → 1 for W 2 → ∞ at fixed Q 2. The total photoabsorption cross section is related to elastic diffraction in terms of a sum rule. The excess of diffractive production over the elastic component is due to inelastic diffraction that contains the production of hadronic states of higher spins. Motivated by the diffractive mass spectrum, the generalized vector dominance/color dipole picture (GVD/CDP) is extended to successfully describe the DIS data in the full region of x ≤ 0.1, all Q 2 ≥ 0, where the diffractive two-gluon-exchange mechanism dominates.

Deep inelastic scattering and “elastic” diffraction

We examine the total cross section of virtual photons on protons, σγ∗p(W , Q), at low x ∼= Q/W 2 ≪ 1 and its connection with “elastic” diffractive production γ T,Lp → X T,L p in the two-gluon exchange dynamics for the virtual forward Compton scattering amplitude. Solely based on the generic structure of twogluon exchange, we establish that the cross section is described by the (imaginary part o...

Diffraction at HERA and the Confinement Problem

We discuss HERA data on the high energy behavior of the total γ∗p cross section and on diffraction in deep inelastic scattering. We outline their novelty in comparison with diffraction in high energy hadron hadron scattering. As a physical picture, we propose an interpretation in terms of QCD radiation at small and large distances: a careful study of the transition between the two extremes repr...

New approaches to the determination of the total cross section

New methods have been developed for extracting the parameters of diffraction scattering amplitude, σtot and ρ = ReFN/ImFN , from experimental data. The latter determines these parameters with less errors and without the knowledge of the normalization coefficient. The impact of additional information from the measurement of the spin-dependence cross section on the determination of the basic char...

Diffractive production and the total cross section in deep inelastic scattering∗

We explore the consequences for diffractive production, γp → Xp, in deep inelastic scattering at low values of x ∼= Q/W 2 ≪ 1 that follow from our recent representation of the total photoabsorption cross section, σγ∗p, in the generalized vector dominance/color dipole picture (GVD/CDP) that is based on the generic structure of the two-gluon exchange from QCD. Sum rules are derived that relate th...

energy nucleon collisions

The commonly used West and Yennie model approach to the description of the interference between Coulomb and hadronic scattering of nucleons is critically examined and its deficiencies are clarified. The preference of the more general eikonal model approach is summarized. High-energy elastic scattering of nucleons is realized mostly due to the strong hadronic interactions, and in the case of cha...
